The Adidas Tournament of Champions started in 2007 and was somewhat an afterthought tournament. Several of the coaches who participated in the boys Gateway City Soccer Classic asked if there was ever a chance of having a similar event for girl's in the spring? While there wasn't such an event, one was developed rather quickly. What started out as an 8 team experiment, developed into a 12 team event in year one and featured 3 teams in the top 5 in the Nation including the #1 team in the nation.
Since that first year, the event has grown into 32 teams from 5 different states and is played on some of the best natural grass fields in the Midwest. ESPN Rise uses the T of C as a gauge for thier national rankings and many a team have made a name for themselves in the rankings based on their performance in Burlington.
A unique aspect of the T of C is that teams of all levels can compete. There are brackets for teams that are traditionally state and national powers as well as a group for teams that are in the beginning stages of developing thier programs.
Annually, numerous college coaches from Division I to NAIA attend the T of C to watch some of the best players in the Midwest.
